Peter Hanson wins European Tour’s KLM Open

Peter Hanson emerged from a back-and -forth battle for the lead to claim the KLM Open with an eagle on the 72nd hole Sunday.

Hanson and Pablo Larrazabal each had and shared the lead on several occasions in the final round at Hilversumsche Golf Club in The Netherlands, but Hanson emerged victorious for his fifth career European Tour title.

He is the third professional coached by Gary Gilchrist to win this year, joining Yani Tseng and Shanshan Feng.

Playing one group ahead of Larrazabal, in the second to last pairing, Hanson piped his drive on the short par 5 18th, playing just 499 yards, leaving just a short iron in for a chance at a two-shot lead. From about 30 feet, Hanson drained a downhill right to left putt to get to 14-under-par and force Larrazabal to eagle for any hopes at a playoff.

Larrazabal went on to make par as Hanson claimed his first win on the European Tour since 2010.

Hanson, of Sweden, was close to a number of other wins this year and had such a solid 2012 that he qualified for the Ryder Cup despite being winless before making the team.

This season, Hanson notched five top finishes while tying for third at The Masters and adding a tie for seventh at the PGA Championship.

“I’m really happy for Peter,” said Gary Gilchrist, who was in the Netherlands with Hanson all week. “He’s had such a good year, and he’s been really close several times, so it was good to see him get this one today.”
